TMJ Treatment for Jaw Pain, Clenching and Headaches

Jaw pain can affect much more than your jaw. It can make chewing uncomfortable, cause facial tension, contribute to headaches, and leave your jaw feeling stiff, tight, or difficult to open.

At The Headache Clinic, we provide expert assessment and treatment for TMJ dysfunction, more accurately called TMD or temporomandibular disorder.

What is TMD?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. When this joint, and the muscles around it, are not working properly, it can lead to TMD.

Many people say they “have TMJ”, but TMJ is actually the name of the joint. TMD is the condition that causes pain and dysfunction in this area.

Common symptoms

TMD can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw
  • Difficulty opening the mouth fully
  • Jaw stiffness or locking
  • Pain when chewing
  • Clenching or grinding the teeth
  • Headaches, especially around the temples
  • Facial pain or tension
  • Neck tightness or discomfort

What causes TMD?

TMD often develops from a combination of factors, rather than one single cause. These may include:

  • Teeth clenching or grinding
  • Stress and muscular tension
  • Previous jaw injury
  • Excessive gum chewing
  • Joint irritation or arthritic change
  • Dysfunction in the jaw, neck, or surrounding muscles

Because the jaw, head and neck work so closely together, jaw dysfunction can often contribute to headaches and ongoing facial tension.

Our approach to treatment

At The Headache Clinic, we take an expert hands-on physiotherapy approach to treating TMD.

We look beyond the jaw alone to identify the real driver of your symptoms. Treatment may involve:

  • Targeted treatment to the jaw joint
  • Hands-on therapy for surrounding muscles
  • Treatment of associated neck dysfunction
  • Improving jaw movement and control
  • Reducing tension, clenching and irritation

Our goal is to reduce pain, restore normal movement, and help you return to comfortable day-to-day function.

When to seek help

It may be time to book an assessment if you have:

  • Ongoing jaw pain or tightness
  • Clicking or locking that is getting worse
  • Difficulty chewing or opening your mouth
  • Clenching or grinding at night
  • Headaches linked with jaw or facial tension
